Back Vocal explores Iran's prohibition, since the Islamic Revolution of 1979, which forbids female solo singers to perform, allowing women only to sing as part of a choir.

This film captures the struggles of contemporary Iranian singers and musicians working to be heard in their own country.

biography

Mojtaba Mirtahmasb was born in 1971 in the city of Kerman in Iran. He graduated from the University of Art in Tehran. Following his studies, he directed nine documentary-fiction films - Art Stories Series - introducing Iranian traditional handicrafts to the younger generations. Mr. Mirtahmasb has worked with many of the big names in Iranian cinema, most recently co-directing This is Not a Film by Jafar Panahi.
